My husband and I now share our home in Arcata with our cat, Buttercup and dog, Turtle.</p><p><strong>Inspired by a lifelong commitment to public service, my journey began with my mom's influence, instilling in me the value of extending a helping hand to my neighbors through volunteering.</strong></p><p>From college days spent restoring native oak reserves in the Tulare County to my current involvement with Arcata’s Transportation Safety Committee, I've dedicated myself to making a positive impact. She now shares her home in Arcata with her husband and their two pets. Sernas’ campaign is focused on exploring affordable housing solutions, improving road infrastructure and acting as an ambassador between the Cal-Poly and resident communities.</p><p><br></p><p>Serna’s’s background in public service extends back to her days as a member of Interact and restoring native oak reserves in her hometown to her current service as a sitting member of Arcata’s Transportation Safety Committee. <p>As a university student turned Arcata resident, I bring a critical perspective to the city council. Now my commitment is to create avenues for students to invest in our city. Ensuring it thrives with accessible housing, efficient transit, and diverse job opportunities. Collaboration with the university is crucial and while advocating for the city's best interests, I aim to foster a partnership that enhances both student and resident investment in our city’s future.</p>

<p>The Redwood Coalition for Climate and Environmental Responsibility has released its endorsements for the 2024 election.</p><p>The mission of the Redwood Coalition for Climate and Environmental Responsibility (RCCER, pronounced “rocker”) is to ensure that local elected officials and government agencies on California’s North Coast take robust, just and equitable actions to address the climate crisis and other key environmental issues.</p><p>There are a lot of important environmental issues at stake in this year’s elections. We need to ensure that we elect leaders who are serious about fighting climate change and promoting environmental justice.</p><p>RCCER endorses the following candidates:</p><p>• Sarah Schaefer, Arcata City Council</p><p>• Stacy Atkins-Salazar, Arcata City Council</p><p>• Genevieve Serna, Arcata City Council</p><p>• Tom Wheeler, Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District Division 1</p><p>• Heidi Benzonelli, Humboldt Community Services District Board of Directors</p><p>• Michael Hansen, Humboldt Community Services District Board of Directors</p><p>In addition, RCCER urges climate voters to vote on the following ballot measures and propositions.</p><p>• RCCER urges climate voters to vote no on Measure F. Measure F would stop development of six affordable housing projects and a transit center that were placed in climate-friendly locations near jobs and essential services. RCCER strongly supports the kind of smart, infill, affordable housing that Measure F aims to prevent.</p><p>• RCCER urges climate voters to vote yes on Proposition 4. Proposition 4 would approve a State bond to fund necessary climate adaptation projects, conserve nature, and also fund new renewable energy projects.</p><p>• RCCER urges climate voters to vote yes on Proposition 5. If approved, Proposition 5 would lower the voter threshold for approval of local housing and infrastructure bonds from the current two-thirds to 55 percent.</p><p>This would make it easier for local communities to fund new infrastructure to adapt to the climate crisis as well as build new affordable housing.</p>

Before I begin, I first want to thank the City Council for all of the hard work and discussion they’ve participated in regarding the Gateway Plan these past few years. This is a big change for the city and their input isn’t going unappreciated.</p><p>As the subject implies, <strong>I wanted to write in expressing my support of the Planning Commission and staff’s recommendation of building heights and massing, laid out in the current plan.</strong></p><p>I understand the fear that surrounds such a big potential change in the landscape of the city. I would be lying if I didn’t, at one time, also let those fears inform my own opinions of that change.</p><p>But after some discussion with some very good friends about what the city would lose if we didn’t accept those changes, scared me more.</p><p>Without density, Arcata will not be able to meet its goals of walkable, bikeable streets.</p><p>Arcata won’t be able to address its housing shortage in any meaningful way.</p><p>Arcata won’t be able to stave off the suburban sprawl that consumes our precious green space.</p><p><strong>Whether we recognize it or not, Arcata has always been in a state of change and growth. It’s different from the city it was 20 years ago and 20 years before that and so on.</strong></p><p>With this in mind I hope we also recognize that change and growth isn’t inherently negative. That it won’t dissolve away what we love so much about our city.</p><p>Having grown up in the rural Central Valley, I’ve lived in small towns all my life and I can tell you first hand, the heart of Arcata has nothing to do with its small size or short buildings. But rather, it has everything to do with the people who come here to connect, to contribute and to live out the principles of equality, sustainability and community that Arcata encourages.</p><p>Before I wrap up I looked up some renderings of 7-story buildings and found this proposed construction (with no stepbacks) next to two existing 2- and 3-story buildings in Spokane.</p><p>While the rendered building is taller and newer than its neighbors, what’s more important is what I <em>don’t</em> see.</p><p>The road beneath isn’t shrouded in darkness. The people in front of it aren’t eclipsed by its height. And the look of the apartments isn’t reminiscent of the Section 8 housing of the ’70s and ’80s.</p><p>It’s just a building. Pretty unremarkable and similar to ones I’ve seen before and ones I’ll likely see in the future. <strong>What it does have is potential.</strong> Potential to house new Arcatans or the next essential North Country business. KLH | Union</span></span><p>ARCATA – In a break between cloudbursts, the first known candidate for Arcata City Council in this Novermber’s election made her announcement at City Hall last Saturday.</p><p>Genevieve Serna, a 10-year Humboldter with four years living in Arcata, county employee and former Transportation Safety Committee (TSC) member, said she’s running for “a million reasons,” beginning with her love of the city and advocacy for improved transportation.</p><p>After graduating Humboldt State, she came to realize that transport was just one part of a larger set of policies required to preserve Arcata’s livability. Her campaign brochure lists primary emphasis on housing solutions, transportation safety and building the partnership with Cal Poly Humboldt<em> (more, page B7).</em></p><p>Serna plans to campaign throughout the summer, and will be present at many public events for discussion and listening.</p><p>Any official candidacy is months away. The first day council aspirants can take out papers from the City Clerk’s office is July 15. These must be returned with 20 signatures from registered Arcata voters by Aug. 9. The election is Nov. 5.</p><p>Three of five council seats will be available – those presently held by Vice Mayor Alex Stillman, Councilmember Stacey-Atkins Salazar and Councilmember Sarah Schaefer.</p>
